Soundproofing Floors
*Please Note: PhoneStar was previously branded as Phonewell
Soundproofing floors with the versatile PhoneStar acoustic insulation product provides excellent results. Floor soundproofing has been made easy with the introduction of PhoneStar which significantly reduces both Airborne Sound (e.g. talking, television, music noise) and Impact Sound (e.g. footstep noise, furniture moving overhead) through floors. The award winning PhoneStar board is very thin, is easy to install, is natural and sustainable and will last for the lifetime of the building. PhoneStar sound insulation has been rigorously tested by various laboratories both in terms of its acoustic performance as well as its structural capabilities, and it is CE marked.
PhoneStar is extremely popular for significantly reducing noise from noisy neighbours, from within one’s own home or workplace as well as for ensuring that a property meets Building Regulation requirements. PhoneStar acoustic insulation works extremely well with underfloor heating because it has very high thermal mass properties, which means that it will store the heat and will release it gradually as the room cools. It also spreads the heat out evenly in the floor. Because the PhoneStar sound insulation material is only 15mm thick, the complete finished system barely raises the floor height and should not interfere with door thresholds. The floor soundproofing system is easy to fit and full installation instructions are provided below. Please contact us if you would like a Soundproofing Installer to fit the system for you.

PhoneStar sound attenuation board offers excellent floor soundproofing on timber and concrete floors and the project can be a new build, a conversion, a refurbishment or a remedial situation.
There are various methods for soundproofing floors with PhoneStar and we would strongly recommend the Ideal Soundproofing Floors Solution for an excellent acoustic performance. This method incorporates a floating resilient layer on top of the floor and a decoupled ceiling below which reduces vibrations considerably. If access is only available to the floor above, then PhoneStar will still offer a very good reduction in airborne and impact noise – probably the best soundproofing floors product in the market for its slim size. Please see PDF’s for expected results.
Flanking Details
All acoustic floors and ceilings are susceptible to flanking noise via flanking walls, particularly lightweight block walls, which may or may not need treating with PhoneStar acoustic insulation. For the treatment of walls see Soundproofing Walls. This noise may not even be noticeable but do be aware of it. Also please be aware when soundproofing floors that some structural noise (e.g. doors banging downstairs) can be very difficult to eliminate because the complete building structure is vibrating – not just the separating floor. The best solution for this is to put foam strips around the inner door frame.
Impact Sound Reduction Only
If there is no issue with airborne noise going between upstairs and downstairs but impact or footstep noise can be heard downstairs then the floor could be treated with 12mm or 19mm thick Pavatex Standard Natural wood fibre insulation boards which are laid down floating on the timber or concrete sub-deck. The ceiling downstairs can also be decoupled with resilient bars as per the PhoneStar system for better results. This option will give good impact sound reduction at a more competitive price.
